Sub-head 10.-Waterworks (a) Miscellaneous, $8,000.-Provides for small extensions to subsidiary water mains and other miscellaneous minor works.

(b) Meters, $15,000.-Provides for the supply of meters

throughout the year,

(e) Distribution Mains, $5,000.—To provide for the re- placement of worn out water mains in existing districts and for water mains in newly developed areas.

13.-Port Works, $2,000.-Covers expenses incurred in taking soundings, borings, and for preliminary investigations in connection with new and proposed harbour works, foreshore dumping, etc.

COMMUNICATIONS.

14. New 100-ft. Road between Causeway Bay and Quarry Bay, $121,400, The work on this road has already been described in previous Notes on Estimates. It is expected that the road, now know as King's Road, will be completed during the year. The total estimated cost of the work is $630,000, this estimate being based on the altered width and alignment of that portion of the road towards the Causeway Bay end.

15. Surfacing 10-ft. Roads on the Praya East, $1,000. To continue sur- facing, channelling and kerbing such portions of these roads as require to be done in mutual agreement with Lot holders.

16.-Formation of Road adjoining Inland Lots 3685 and 3686, Blue Pool Road, Wongneichong, $13,600-In order to link up the development brought about by the sale of these lots, it is necessary to connect Sing Woo Road from near Tsun Yun Street to Blue Pool Road at the North East corner of Inland Lot No. 3685. This vote provides for the work.

MISCELLANEOUS.

17. Re-instatement of Government Retaining Walls, $5,000.-These walls are examined annually and this vote provides for the repair or recon- struction of any walls which are considered dangerous,

18.-Traffic White Lines, Studs and Motor Signs, etc., $5,000. To meet the cost of providing and laying down either white lines or studs on road corners, curves and junctions, and also motor signs, etc.

19. Chinese Cemeteries, laying out new areas, $8,000.-To provide for

additional burial areas in cemeteries.

20.—Colonial Cemetery, laying out new areas, $1,000.-To provide for an extension to the burial area within the boundaries of the Colonial Cemetery, Happy Valley.

21.-Nullah Training between Sing Woo and Blue Pool Roads, $30,000.-To construct a nullah in the section of road described under sub-head 16.

22.-Flush Latrine, Lockhart Road, $12,000.-To provide a public con-

venience in this district.

23.-Sewer extension between Sing Woo and Blue Pool Roads, $9,000.— To provide a sewer to connect the lots referred to in sub-head 16, with the head of the existing sewer in Sing Woo Road.

Sub-head 24.-Rewiring of Government Buildings, $3,750.-This sum is required for the replacement of defective and dangerous electrical wiring in Govern- ment buildings.

25.-Conversion, dry latrine to Flush, Shek Tong Tsui Market, $1,000.—To

provide a water carriage system to the existing dry latrine.

26. Sexton's quarters and store, Kai Lung Wan Cemetery, $1,250.—To provide additional quarters and a room for the temporary housing of bones at Kai Lung Wan East Cemetery.

27.--Peak School, Improvements, $3,000.-To enlarge classrooms by the

inclusion of verandahs and to provide a teachers common room.

28.—Postal Kiosk, Saiwanho, $3,500. The provision of postal facilities in this district is limited. It is hoped that the provision of this kiosk will meet a long felt want.

WATER WORKS.

29.--Back Lane Service Pipes, $3,000.-To provide for the extension of subsidiary service pipes in back lanes in newly developed properties to obviate the excessive cutting of roads which would be necessary for direct connection to principal mains. These subsidiary mains are eventually paid for by house owners when connections are requested.

30.—Eastern pumping scheme, Jardine's Lookout, Middle Gap and Mount Cameron Section, $10,000.-To complete this scheme and provide for the payment of retention money.

31.-Stanley Supply, $58,000.-To provide a water supply for this district which will serve the increased development including the Gaol, etc.

32.-Extension of Reclamation at North Point, $60,000.-To continue the work on this reclamation which will provide a further area for dumping. A large quantity of rock is still available from cutting on the 100-foot road referred to in sub-head 14 above, and it is an economy to absorb it in this work.

33.-Construction of Seawall and Cattle Pier at Kennedy Town, $6,000.—-

For payment of retention money and to complete.

34.-Construction of Yard for Storage of Sand at Praya East, $500.-For

payment of retention money.

35.-Blake Pier Improvements, $10,000.-Owing to the deterioration of certain parts of the under structure of this pier it is necessary to remove the main portion of the pier roof and to replace certain de- fective bracing.

PUBLIC HEALTH & BUILDINGS ORDINANCE.

36.--Compensation for St. Peter's Church, West Point, $36,000.—A sum of $50,000 was promised as compensation in respect of the resumption of this church. By agreement the money was to be paid over as the new church progressed in erection. $14.000 has already been paid to the church authorities and this sum will complete the com- pensation. The new church is being erected at Kowloon Tong.

37.-Resumption of Road Widening Schemes approved by Government as rebuilding occurs, $10,000.-This vote is to cover expenditure in con- nection with resumptions of private properties fronting on roads which require either widening or realignment.
